There is one bit of software that has been around for about 20 years; not specifically Construction Software, but probably used more by construction than anyone else: Microsoft Project! Many is the project turnaround role I’ve walked into where there has been no Build Programme beyond some stupid Master Build Programme that merely says “From now till then, stick it up”! I’ve set to on the job and come up with a Detailed Programme to Completion (DPC).

Now for some reason “employees”, and in this I include quite senior management, don’t seem to be aware of what a fantastic tool a DPC is for their project, their profit and their business! I’ve been criticised, more than once, for spending their money on my time producing the DPC! But come up with one, stick copies up here, there and everywhere so that the skilled trades can see it and what happens? They are such a bolshie bunch that the work flow actually increases dramatically! “Is that all he wants? We can do better than that!” The project accelerates and often completes well before hand-over date. I’ve also found that a DPC is the most important tool for project turnaround and getting it back on programme, thus avoiding Delay and LAD! Senior management in SME’s can be quite opposed to spending their money for a Planner to come up with a DPC prior to start on site. It is with them that the education about maximising construction software needs to start! Twenty years on and so many of them are still blinkered about it!

That, from my experience, was the start of project management software in construction; the good old MS Project! But times have moved on and we now have Construction Software written especially for our needs in the building game! The laugh of it is that whereas MS Project actually costs money to buy and have someone use before it saves money, today’s Construction Software is a dramatic money-saver from Day 1. – except that any outfit with any sense will still shell out for Project and a Planner to use it The DPC will get incorporated, as a very important component, into the Construction Software they should be using!

So why, exactly, must you educate employees to maximise Construction Software? – and don’t forget for a moment that, in this context you are also “employees” so that has to start with! You tell the underlings, once you’re convinced, and they do it! (Hopefully – lol) Two reasons; Time and Money!

Now it doesn’t matter whether you are Client or Contractor, by using today’s Construction Software, the ones saving their time will be the employees! No great heaps of paperwork to be dealt with so they can get off site and back to the family earlier every night! You save your time, too! Instead of wasting your time rooting round trying to find bits of paper that was probably misfiled anyway, you just need to make a few clicks on your screen and all is revealed!

So who saves the money? You do!

In today’s world everyone has their own laptops, tablet or smart phone and they are all that is needed for everyone to make full use of construction and project management software! You don’t have to buy them! Then you don’t have to pay for a load of filing cabinets and lever arch files to keep bits of paper in on site! When the project is finished you don’t have to pay for all the archive storage space to keep bits of paper from every contract you’ve had for 6 years!

Go back and you’ll find I wrote an earlier Blog telling you how much money that would actually cost you. Well, not quite; don’t think I included any archiving requirements in that! Suppose that is a fairly wide variable, anyway, depending on where your head offices are.

So what money do you still have to spend on record-keeping for a project? Depends – have a look at www.geniebelt.com and that will give you monthly guide prices for your projects. Damned cheap, isn’t it? Not exactly a heavy financial investment!

Yes, go for GenieBelt; of all the construction software and project management software available, GenieBelt is the one that provides absolutely everything we need in construction!

So there are the reasons Why you must educate employees to maximise construction software. Let there be no exceptions!

Also remember that, in this context, you count as an employee even if you are sole owner of your company or a Main Board Director, and the education has to start with you! Just hope I’ve convinced you of it all!
